THE RICHARD L. AND DIANE M. BLOCK FOUNDATION AWARDS 2024 WEST HIGH SCHOOL EXCEPTIONAL TEACHER AWARD RECIPIENTS

Anchorage, AK – Three educators from West Anchorage High School were awarded the Richard L. and Diane M. Block Foundation’s Exceptional Teacher Award (ETAF) on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

Ivonne Hamlin, English Language Arts
From her nominator: As a new student of West Anchorage High as of this year I didn’t know any students or teachers. She was incredibly polite towards me and invited me to have lunch in her room with her and other teachers/students. She helped me integrate easier into the West High environment. She is a truly kind individual.

Justin Szymanski, ROTC, Physical Education & Health, Career Technology, SPED
From his nominator: Justin has gone above and beyond always going the extra mile for our students. Justin spends countless hours beyond the school day organizing and creating memories for our students. His dedication to WHS is unmatched. Justin has shown students skills through his AMPED class that will prepare them for the workplace outside of West High after graduation. Justin is passionate about students gaining knowledge and skills that they can use for a life time.

Gabrielle Whitfield, Visual & Performing Arts, Music & World Languages
From her nominator: Every single day, Mrs. Whitfield greets the orchestra with unparalleled energy and enthusiasm. She builds her musicians up, and fosters an environment of joy and camaraderie in the West Orchestra community. In the 6 years that I’ve been in orchestras under Mrs. Whitfield, she’s taught me so much about leadership and taking on responsibility. She’s taught me how to connect with people on a personal level, and earn love and respect instead of demanding it.

Established in 2015, the award was created to recognize those teachers (in up to each of the six academic departments) demonstrating an exceptional contribution to the preparation of students for life after graduation. Teachers are nominated by students, parents and peers and the awards are granted annually at the completion of the school year. Teachers were presented with a monetary award of $2,500 for the 2023-24 school year and will be listed on a plaque in the West Anchorage High School foyer.
